Event track:
Data & Visualization

The urban fabric that forms our city is more complex than ever before. From the physical structures that form our cities, to us, the human beings, filling those structures with life and meaning, to the almost invisible layer of digital technologies and information, connecting all those elements. Terms like Smart City are trying to grasp the complexity that we are able to observe and analyse with those new technologies. The years to come will need to show the long term effect those new insights will bring to urban planning, social involvement and new data driven businesses.

In our session on Data, Visualization & the City we will explore three perspectives on the opportunities of data and visualization in the urban context. Maria Cecília de Carvalho Rodrigues working for GIZ (German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation), will talk about the SFD (shit flow diagrams) visualization tool developed by the GIZ. The tool assists urban planners with sanitation programming tasks. Tyler Bird Community Development Strategist at CARTO, will talk about CARTO’s involvement in the open data community. Sebastian Meier visualization researcher at the Interaction Design Lab, at the University of applied sciences Potsdam, will pick up on the notion of sense making and focus on how visualization can break down complexity in order to help citizens understand their cities and thereby creating a more inclusive urban planning discourse.

Speakers:
Maria Cecília de Carvalho Rodrigues, GIZ
Tyler Bird, community manager at CARTO
Sebastian Meier, FHP - Interaction Design Lab
