The Anthropocene: An urban planet

The international research platform Future Earth launches a major new initiative – the Future Earth Urban Knowledge Action Network – to bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to co-produce the knowledge needed for sustainable cities.

• Opening statement by Minister of Housing Peter Eriksson from the Government of Sweden on the importance of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda particularly in the context of the UN SDGs. To achieve these goals, there is a need for :
  
  • science to guide decision makers
  • collaboration between researchers, local and federal governments, international science-policy fora, civil society and the private sector.
• Presentation by Prof Xuemei Bai (Australian National University): Future Earth and why sustainable urbanization and cities are important in the entire Future Earth picture. The rationale and vision of the Urban KAN.
• Interactive Panel Discussion with feedback from the audience including participation from members of the Urban KAN to answer/react to the panelists:
  
  • (From your stakeholder perspective) what should be the main priorities for the Urban KAN to support the implementation of the NUA and UN SDGs?
  • (From your stakeholder perspective) what engagement mechanisms should the Urban KAN use to ensure useful and effective dialogues with stakeholders?
